Academic writing for PhD candidates and Master students
Are you a Master student or PhD candidate looking to write more confidently at postgraduate level? In this course you will learn how to build stronger literature reviews, shape clearer arguments and produce more polished academic texts.
This four-week postgraduate writing course is designed to help master's students and doctoral candidates master the skills needed to write higher-quality papers for their postgraduate research. The course will take place twice a week.
The course is divided into weekly topics, beginning with an introduction to the role and structure of literature review. Students will engage with essential writing topics such as organisational patterns, linguistic nuances and writing cohesion, while learning to distinguish between summarising and synthesising academic sources. Key activities include analysing sample literature, practising writing techniques and improving the clarity and coherence of their own texts.
Throughout the course, students will focus on more advanced writing strategies, such as critical analysis, methodological reviews, and the integration of theoretical frameworks into their written work. The course also addresses the importance of covering claims, avoiding plagiarism, and refining academic style and grammatical structures. A final peer review and revision session gives students the opportunity to refine their own draft text based on feedback, so that they leave the course with the skills necessary to improve their work for the rest of their studies.
Overall, this course is designed to provide a structured approach to mastering the complexities of academic writing and research for their chosen fields of study.
