English in the International Workplace is a new short course created by UM Language Centre aimed at professionals who would like to become more confident in communicating in English in an international workplace.

English in the International Workplace is a short course developed by the UM Language Centre for professionals who want to communicate more confidently and effectively in English within global work environments. Delivered in a workshop-style format, the course combines practical exercises, group work, and personalized feedback from an experienced Business English tutor.

Over seven 90-minute sessions, participants focus on essential workplace communication skills, including social interaction, constructive discussions, professional emailing, handling sensitive situations, managing teams, and delivering effective presentations. The course also explores intercultural differences in communication, helping participants navigate diverse professional settings with clarity and diplomacy. Through interactive tasks, role-plays, and practical exercises, participants gain hands-on experience and actionable strategies for improving their English in real workplace contexts.

Course level check

Admissions requirements: English language B2 minimum. This course is designed for participants with a B2 level or above in order to fully benefit from the course. 

Before starting this course it is mandatory to schedule an online course level check to make sure that the course fits your level. Please send an e-mail to languages-intake-eng@maastrichtuniversity.nl expressing your interest in the Effective Communication course.  

Book an online course level check well before the course is scheduled to begin. This process will make it easier to make the appointment, and more likely that there will still be an available spot in the module that’s right for you. 

We recommend participants attend all 7 sessions in order to get the full benefit of the activities. If you cannot attend more than one of the sessions, please let us know at registration.

English in the International Workplace

The course consists of seven 1,5 hour sessions, which target essential language functions at work including the following:

  • Social English: How to make small talk, start and finish conversations and show interest in others’ contributions
  • Constructive discussions: How to give your opinions, agree and disagree with teammates respectfully
  • Emailing: How to write effective emails in formal and informal situations. Intercultural differences in written communication styles will be discussed. Personalized feedback on participants’ writing will be provided.
  • Dealing with sensitive situations: How to manage complaints using diplomatic language. Intercultural differences in such situations will be reflected on.
  • Managing people: How to request action, take action and communicate deadlines
  • Presenting: How to deliver a work-related presentation more confidently using the most effective presentation structure, language, body language, visuals and slides. Participants will prepare and deliver their own presentation and receive personalized feedback from the tutor.

Each session is delivered in workshop-style ensuring plenty of opportunities to work in groups under the guidance of the highly experienced Business English tutor.
